During the new year holidays I spent a few days in Lisbon enjoying some amazing European weather (I did not see a drop of rain for the whole time I was in Europe!) and taking a few photos here and there. I’ve been shooting lots towards the end of 2011 and this holiday I felt […]

With this post I’m happy to announce the latest addition to my free wallpaper collection, it features a photograph from one of my favourite places in New Zealand – Lake Manapouri.  Cathedral Peaks are part of the Kepler Mountains range and located on the northern shore of the lake, which is also known as “lake of many islands”, “rainy lake”, “sorrow heart” and “loveliest Lake of New Zealand”.

As before, this and older wallpapers with updated calendar are available for download here: Free Desktop Wallpaper Calendars. Selected images form my portfolio are also available as high resolution wallpapers for Android phones.

Despite of many troubles successfully organised by Finnair, I’m finally back in Sydney. It was a great trip with almost full winter holiday experience – low temperatures, lots of snow, snowmobiles, skies, snowshoes, reindeers, dog sleds and northern lights. I’m not really happy with results from photography prospective, but, I promise, there will be a few images.

P.S. From logistics prospective this trip wasn’t perfect – in addition to disrupted plans caused Finnair cabin crew strike, I’ve lost a bunch of LiIon batteries (including spares for Canon 5DMkII and 20D) – confiscated by Helsinki airport security. I didn’t know that LiIon batteries should not be in the checked-in baggage. So, keep it in mind and bring it with you on board.

We have some friends that are trying an experiment, the really big downsize from a 2 bedroom house to a 1 bedroom camper trailer. Their 2 bedroom house isn’t big in today’s mcmansion standards, but it was a typical 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, living room, dining room, and kitchen home. In today’s words, their house was a good starter home for a double income no kids couple. Well, they decided to see if they can live even more stealthy, now they are in a 1 bedroom, small bathroom and one all purpose room camper. The bedroom is the size of a king sized bed with a double bed in it. That leaves about 1 ft on each side of the bed to walk around the bed. To get to the bedroom, you have to walk through the bathroom. There is a really small shower and a smaller than normal toilet. The multipurpose room a short couch, a dining table, a small kitchen and enough floor space to put a yoga mat. Living like this forces them to live minimally, live neat, live clean, and live with what really matters to them.

Our friends invited out to dinner at their place. It was really great! It was a nice evening, we sat outside, and we cooked out. Hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans and berry cobbler dessert. While we were cooking and chatting, some other neighbors took to the stage that is at one end of the camper park, and played all the good 70’s and 80’s standards. They were just far enough away that we could speak at normal levels, and the band was good enough that we really enjoyed having the free music while we relaxed. Our friends camper is near the laundry facilities, so other neighbors walking to do laundry came by to say hello. We had a good time chatting, eating, listening and saying hello to neighbors.

It may not be obvious at first glance, but Blue Mountains is full of waterfalls – I think I will be able to show you at least 40 of them and I’m sure there are more. Most of them are relatively small, some require rainy days to demonstrate its’ beauty, but if you are a true waterfall fan, size shouldn’t matter, right? ( … continue reading )

I haven’t been traveling much over the last couple months and as a result I ran out of fresh images to post. Obviously one of the solutions to my problem is to go out and shoot more. Another approach is to explore something that was missed or left unprocessed in the past, basically look back. And that’s what I’m doing – I look back and dig my image archives.

Independent traveling is a fun way to travel for me. Often I get to see many unexpected places and interact with all sorts of interesting people. This mode of traveling needs a bit more planning and is also more time-consuming as most of the time I have to rely on local transport, whatever there might be. In some countries such as China, this is not a problem as there is a myriad of transport options available, from the publicised train and bus services, to chartered, hitch-hiking and sharing of transport with other travellers. One can virtually get to any secluded corners with a little effort. The same goes for countries such as Pakistan and India. I guess this is a factor of rural hospitality and poverty which makes people more willing to share and help others. This is not the case with more developed countries- in such countries such as USA and most parts of Europe, public transport is only good to bigger cities. Outlying places are not easily accessible by public transport. This is also due to the fact that most people in such countries own their own transport; so the demand and hence, supply for services to more secluded destinations do not exist. Even if options are available such as joining a local tour, these are always only good for the casual look-see, been-there-before type of sightseeing. Renting a car, often is the most feasible option to travel to rural, outlying and secluded places in these countries.

If you are lying from the UK and need to drive to the airport you are stuck with the problem of where to leave your car. Try Gatwick Parking if you are flying from London. Or if you are flying from the North, try parking at Manchester Airport.

So I survived a crazy weekend (actually more like 36 hours) on the streets of Mumbai shooting pretty much all the time and taking small breaks for a bit of sleep or a bit of coffee! Like I mentioned in a previous post, I went to Mumbai over the weekend together with two friends who […]
